Hockey is a game of situations that happen over and over again, strung together in differing sequences. 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, 3x2, entries, breakouts, fore-checks, back-checks, etc. The intelligent player is the one who understands the flow of the game. He has identified the limited number of possibilities that exist at any time and narrowed them down to 1st & 2nd best alternatives. You have be able to have a good perception, situation recognition (example, it's a 2x2 with a back-checker coming), cue identification (I am between red line and own blue), diagnosis (even man situation = must stand up), and also be able to anticipate what will probably happen next (I separate my man from puck and back-checker takes puck). So seeing, understanding & reacting in the right way will allow you to be quicker in all situations. Playing with hockey sense will keep you a step ahead of the other players.
